In 2007, I had a conversation about the culture war with the evangelical pastor Tim Keller that I’ve never forgotten. Keller, who was the founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, died last year, a devastating loss. “I’ve long seen friendships flourish across political differences,” he told me. He was seeing the change everywhere. Your political or theological positions were becoming the primary measure of your virtue, and your conduct was a distant second.

Opinion | From ‘Dune’ to Decadence (and Back)

There are three great novels that I read as an early adolescent that I would take to a desert island if I ever needed to be set up for decades of rereading: The “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “Watership Down” and “Dune.” I’ve written more in the past on J.R.R. Tolkien’s work and even on Richard Adams’s great rabbit epic than on Frank Herbert’s magnum opus. So I can’t let the occasion of “Dune: Part Two” and its imperial command of the box office pass without some kind of comment. The first is about the story’s contemporary resonance. What’s getting less attention, and what I want to highlight, is the larger civilizational dynamic that the book sets up, and how it speaks to our own moment.

More than any film I’ve made, “Tenet” was designed to have this very theatrical, IMAX, larger than life identity. VILLENEUVE: It was not planned that I would get an IMAX film release. Or, I didn’t leave film, film left me and my heart was broken. NOLAN: I just like hearing the guy who made “Dune Two” be like “it’s all about money.” I’ve seen that film. On every film I’ve ever done, including “Oppenheimer,” I first showed it to the studio on cut and copy, taped together, splices and everything.

There’s a whip-smart 10-year-old girl in Gaza who speaks good English, displays a radiant smile and seemed to have a bright future. Instead, she’s lying in a hospital bed with a badly infected wound in her thigh from a bomb blast. “She was supposed to be in Japan,” said Dr. Samer Attar, an orthopedic surgeon who cared for the girl and told me about her. Dr. Attar said the girl needed an amputation at the hip to save her life. Her dad, struggling to come to terms with how his and his daughter’s lives have collapsed, is resisting for now.

With a heavy dose of Bay Area slang, E-40 created a lane for his unique hip-hop vernacular that has made him one of the genre’s most revered artists. In a recent interview, E-40 spoke with The Associated Press about being an underrated legend, his unorthodox rap style and the new cookbook called “Snoop Dogg Presents: Goon With The Spoon, ” which released earlier this week. AP: Where does your unorthodox rap style and wisdom come from? E-40: I’m the oldest of four. E-40: Snoop, that’s my guy.

Black Folk Musicians Are Reclaiming the Genre

[GUITAR PLAYING] I really think folk music can find its origins in all Black music. [BANJO PLAYING] The main thing about folk is it is a storytelling genre. So any genre that conveys a story to the audience I would consider folk music. [FOLK MUSIC PLAYING] There was a particular act called the Carolina Chocolate Drops. I’m also trying to lift up all the different voices so that we have a more well-rounded picture of African-American folk music traditions.

They’re almost enough to make you forget the pleasures of being a little bit bad. We asked 16 writers — most of them respectable adults — about the irresponsible, immoral, indulgent things they do. Years later, we bumped into each other in public, resulting in a humiliating exposition that left everyone questioning my sanity. WASHINGTON — Studying “Hamlet,” the revenge play about a rotten kingdom, I tried for years to fathom Hamlet’s motives, state of mind, family web, obsessions. His consciousness was so complex, Harold Bloom wrote, it seemed bigger than the play itself. Now I’m mired in another revenge play about a rotten kingdom, “Trump.” I’ve tried for years to fathom Donald Trump’s motives, state of mind, family web, obsessions. The man who dumbed down the office of the presidency is a less gratifying subject than the smarty-pants doomed prince. Trump is feral, focused on his own survival, with no sense of shame or boundaries or restraint.

There’s a distinction between signing up to do a job and signing up to have every second micromanaged. I remember there was a Reddit post of someone who was talking about trying to outsource everything in their life and making it superefficient. He recently interviewed Emma Chamberlain about leaving YouTube, Walter Mosley about a dumber America and Cal Newport about a new way to work.
2023 Kia EV6 GT: Fast, Furious, Almost as Good as Tesla

NEED FOR SPEED The performance-enabled version of Kia’s EV6 is the 2023 EV6 GT, with an available 576 hp and 545 lb-ft entrained in the dual-motor all-wheel drive system. Car and Driver recorded 0-60 mph acceleration in 3.2 seconds for the GT, which is quicker in their testing than the Porsche Taycan 4S or Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance. IF THERE IS one rule that people infallibly remember from driver’s ed, it’s that a yellow traffic light means “clear the intersection.” My wife, Tina, has a particularly expansive interpretation of “yellow,” I’ve noticed, exercising her right-of-way at intersections unto the last millisecond of amber, while I watch through my fingers. It’s for these moments, and drivers, that Kia has purposed the 2023 EV6 GT, a low-volume, time-dilating variant of the company’s chic electric crossover.
Every year since I was a teenager, my mom has asked what I wanted for Christmas. After all, my reasoning doesn’t seem to require us to engage in, say, the Socratic method. Maybe the pressure to buy Christmas gifts for anyone is a farce, a scheme created by capitalism to get us to spend, spend, spend on things we don’t want or need. They accept whatever bad (based on how little they use them) gifts I buy for them. But I’m tired of participating in a capitalistic sham, and I’m tired of giving Christmas gifts my family and friends don’t want.
Sometimes they are treated in ways that are illegal to treat prisoners, let alone kids seeking mental health treatment. But former patients from residential treatment facilities whom Times Opinion interviewed said they received one-on-one therapy only once a week, if that. The company owns dozens of hospitals and hundreds of behavioral health facilities and makes about $11 billion a year. In 2017, when he was 15 years old, his mother, Renee Hanania, sent him to a UHS facility in Virginia. America’s patchwork mental health treatment is still insufficient.
